I developed a mid-length channel bottom, the “Mid-Length for Black Belt” which provides the sensation of “lifting drive” even in smaller, slopey-faced waves. The MLBB checked all the boxes on the initial surfs at small-but-clean California Street in Ventura, the channels engaging through the bottom turn and giving that extra “scoot.” But the real surprise came in Maine in eight-foot hurricane surf, both at a hollow beach break and at a roaring reef set-up. It’s a fuller outline with a Makaha-style nose, and increased tail rocker to paddle-in with confidence and come off the cornice without getting hung up. The overall feeling is of a board that just wants bigger and meaner surf, but that also maximizes small waves. MLBBs ride well with either the original Smith Parrish 7.5” wide base, or the new 7.75” Stormrider fin (both by True Ames fins).
